It’s shocking to think that pumpkin spice season is already upon us and Halloween is right around the corner. If employees at your office space in Phoenix are akin to the rest of the population, the candy corn has already infiltrated your workplace. It’s difficult enough to stay in shape when you’re sitting at a desk five days a week, and Halloween and holiday parties compound the problem. Here are a few ways to avoid that unwanted extra winter weight and stay fit at your desk job!
If your Phoenix office space is stocked with sugary sodas and calorie-laden energy drinks, they are a huge contributor to weight gain. In fact, a study by Harvard found direct correlation between the consumption of sugary drinks and obesity and heart disease in the United States. Water is zero-calorie, combats bloat and helps you lose weight! Oftentimes our bodies mistake dehydration for hunger, so it’s easy to overeat if you aren’t properly hydrated. Try to consume around half an ounce to an ounce of water per pound of your body weight a day, and back away from the Red Bull.
To combat being sedentary at your desk, try to incorporate activity throughout the day. If you live close to work consider biking as your mode of transport, or bring a comfortable pair of shoes and walk to lunch. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, and set a timer and get up and walk around the office every one to two hours. These small changes can increase your heart rate, rev up your metabolism, and have positive effects on your health.
Bring meals from home
While those Reese’s minis seem to call to you from their jack-o’-lantern bowl, the best way to keep pesky pounds at bay is to bring your snacks and lunches from home. Opt for whole foods that are low in fat and high in fiber, such as an apple and almonds, or celery sticks and hummus. For lunch try to incorporate a lean protein as well as “good carbs,” like whole-grains or sweet potatoes, and fruits and vegetables. Try to eat something every two to three hours to avoid feeling ravenous and bingeing on donuts in the break room or a large late night dinner.
Promote a fit office
If your office space in Phoenix is a competitive environment, conduct a company-wide fitness challenge. It’s a great way to hold yourself accountable and motivate your employees. Create a recreational sports league within your office or get a group together to train for a charity run or marathon. In addition to staying fit, it will promote a sense of comradery within the workplace.
